Indicator Wording

number of people with adequate and safe access to bathing facilities

Indicator Purpose

The indicator measures the number of people with adequate and safe access to bathing facilities. This indicator is mostly used in the context of camps/ collective settlement.

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

To determine the indicator's value, assess the number of people who have access to bathing facilities that meet the following minimal requirements. Assess compliance with the requirements using review of existing data, observations, and key informant interviews:

  • Is there a maximum of 100 people per 1 communal bathing facility? (Sphere standard; disaggregate by gender)

  • Are the bathing facilities gender separated?

  • Are the bathing facilities lockable from inside?

  • Are the bathing facilities well-lit or do users have access to torches?

  • Are the bathing facilities conveniently accessible to all members of the community? (including people with disabilities)

Disaggregate by

Disaggregate the data by gender and specific vulnerable groups, such as people with disability.

Important Comments

1) In addition to using the methodology above, consider asking in a survey about how safe people (especially women) feel when accessing and using the bathing facilities.

2) Report also on the average number of people per safe bathing facility (i.e. meeting the last four requirements). This corresponds to BHA indicator W21.
