Indicator Level

Output
Outcome

Indicator Wording

number or % of targeted [specify the institution] with year-round access to drinking water

Indicator Purpose

The indicator assesses the proportion of targeted institutions (such as schools, health centres, administration buildings) with a year-round access to drinking water (i.e. water from a safe source).

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

Collect the following data by using observations (Q1-Q2) and conducting key informant interviews (Q1-Q4) with the institutions' employees:

RECOMMENDED SURVEY QUESTIONS (Q) AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS (A)

Q1: Does the [specify the institution] have access to drinking water?

A1: yes / no

(ask the next questions only if the previous answer is YES)

Q2: What is the main source of drinking water for your [specify the institution] ?

A2: _

Improved Drinking Water Sources:

1) piped water into the dwelling

2) piped water into the yard / plot

3) public tap or standpipe

4) borehole / tubewell

5) protected dug well

6) protected spring

7) protected rainwater collection system

8) packaged water (from an improved source)

9) delivered water (by tanker-truck or cart from an improved source)

Unimproved Drinking Water Sources:

10) unprotected dug well

11) unprotected springs

12) surface water

13) other source: ................................

Q3: For how many months per year can you use the water from this source?

A3: all year / …… months per year

(ask the next question only if the water from the main source is not accessible 12 months per year)

Q4: What is the water source you use when you cannot use the water from [specify the main source] ?

A4: use the same options as in A2

To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of targeted institutions with year-round access to drinking water from improved sources by the total number of assessed institutions. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.

Important Comments

1) In many countries, the relevant ministries or UNICEF defined a range of additional water-related standards for schools, health centres and/ or other institutions. Consider including them in your intervention’s design and M&E system.
