What is its purpose?
This indicator measures the extent to which the target group members follow the promoted ways of reducing the use of unsustainable energy sources, such as coal, oil, or unsustainably sourced biomass. Reduction can be achieved by 1) energy efficiency measures that reduce the amount of energy needed (such as fuel-efficient stoves, energy-efficient lighting or housing insulation); or 2) measures that replace unsustainable sources of energy with more eco-friendly sources (such as solar lamps, solar water pumps or domestic biodigesters).
How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data
Determine the indicator's value by using the following methodology:
1) List the energy-saving measures promoted by your intervention. These can be any measures that reduce the consumption of unsustainable energy (see examples above).
2) Define how many measures a respondent needs to practice to be considered as ‘following measures that reduce the usage of unsustainable sources of energy’. For example, using at least 2 out of 4 promoted measures (the benchmark should be pretested so that it is not unrealistically high or unnecessarily low).
3) Conduct individual interviews with a representative sample of the target group members, using the following questions:

Repeat the question for all the remaining energy-saving measures promoted by the project.
4) Count the number of respondents who follow at least the minimum number of the promoted measures (see step 2).
5) To determine the indicator’s value, divide the number of respondents who follow at least the minimum number of the promoted measures by the total number of respondents (exclude those who refused to respond to Q1). Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
Disaggregate the data by the type of energy-saving measures used, wealth category, location and any other factors relevant to the focus and context of the intervention.
1) Examples of measures that reduce the usage of unsustainable sources of energy:
- Measures that reduce energy use: building insulation (heating and cooling take a large amount of energy), energy-efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning), energy-efficient lighting, fuel-efficient stoves, etc.
- Measures that replace unsustainable sources of energy with more sustainable ones: solar panels (incl. solar water pumps, solar lamps, etc.), domestic biodigesters providing cooking and lighting energy, use of other types of waste (e.g. husk) to produce electricity, sustainable pellets from agricultural production for heating, etc.
2) If possible, consider verifying the respondents’ answers by asking them to show the interviewer the energy-saving measure they use (e.g. efficient lighting / solar lamp).
